Video of the week Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! by Nick Cave And The Bad SeedsWhatever you think about Nick Cave - and I think he's among the best songwriters ever - it would be hard to avoid the conclusion that his hair is getting problematic. Long, yet half-missing, it's receding like the tide: the high-water mark now sitting somewhere around the crown. Yet - here's the rub - he's still wearing it at collar length. The ageing-metalhead-meets-Friar-Tuck look is topped off by a bushy mo, a sort of bushranger flourish. Taken together, it's a look that screams "I don't care for fashion". But I'm sure that's not true, he wears a nice suit. The Bad Seeds' new video offers a good opportunity to clock the retreat of Cave's hairline, as it's four minutes of him grooving to camera. Projected behind him are the streets of New York and the band dancing. The song is the lurid tale of Larry, an unlucky character who is unprepared or perhaps just inadequate for what life metes out. The lyrics meld - as usual - biblical tropes with the American gothic and Cave's rich mental landscapes. The video, like the song, is both deadly serious and funny, if you like this kind of thing.
